MSN and Live converging

with 2 comments

Remember the branding mess when Live and MSN were seperated out and a big invisible barrier was built between the two? Well it seems things are reverting back to something more like the way they were. I just spotted a new option on the header on all my Live pages:

That comes a few days after the remodeled MSN UK homepage which Chris Overd talked about here.

Berkowitz is obviously having an effect but this coming together of the Live and MSN brands only goes to show what a mess they made of it in the first place.

  1. They should have just simply described it as

Windows Live = search + services (web search, e-mail, IM)
MSN = content (news, horoscopes, games, movies, etc.)

That’s all. As for the new header, I think it’s real dumb. It has nothing to do with Windows Live, yet it’s in the Windows Live header.

  2. I don’t think its dumb. I think its really smart. Windows Live is a platform and that means that other stuff (e.g. MSN) runs upon it. Microsoft should (and will be) trying to convert MSN users into Windows Live users and vice versa. I have started using MSN lately whereas I’ve never used it in the past – simply because Windows Live leads me there occasionally.

I also wouldn’t be surprised to see the personalised Live.com homepage disappearing soon in favour of My MSN.
