Live Search background idea

with 4 comments

I have just been having a typed-conversation with Joe Medford and he had a great idea that Live Search could adopt which I hope he won’t mind me mentioning here.

Those in the US may remember that recently Live Search displayed a photo background. It was a nice photo too as you can see here:

Joe’s idea was that Live Search should use themed backgrounds for seasonal events in a similar way that Google changes their logo on different days of the year. What a fantastic idea, my irish fiance and I would love to (for example) head to Live Search on St Patrick’s Day and see a suitably themed background.

This is too good an idea for Live Search not to do it. Let’s hope this idea gets through to them somehow.

P.S. Naturally I used Live Image Search to turn up the above photo.

  1. Roger that sir.  I have read about this background image and was pretty psyched about it.  However I have never seen an image displayed, just the simple gradient on the lower right hand side.  I try to use search.live.com, personal issues with google, and it has made huge strides in accuracy and usability but the one thing the other Live services have over Google and Yahoo is the visuals.  The gradient is still better than google’s plain white with graphics logo that gets animated for holidays but cmon….

  2. Yes Jamie I too think on the same lines. And the theme should be according to region. So regional themes should be popular if provided in attractive way. World Occasions can be common for all regions. And they should be light weight, else picture loading itself may annoy some. And recently such an idea of themes have been implemented in MSN Toolbar. On 4th July it was auto updated to show American Flag. MSN Toolbar gets Weather Button, Themes

  3. By theme, do you mean just a background picture, or more? Can you elaborate how you could possibly theme a search results page? Or is it just the Live Search homepage?
Wouldn’t background pictures slow down page loading? What if most people just want a clean page to start searching from, instead of a big distracting background picture (Google just changes the logo, nothing else too big)? What if the Live Search team doesn’t use a particularly good image that people like, or people just don’t like their search page altered that way?
