Thoughts, about stuff

On a Windows Live URL tip again

with 7 comments

Short one this.

Dave Winer is complaining about Google URLs:

For example — a Google Map link to the Empire State Building:  Permalink to this paragraph

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=Empire+State+Building,+New+York,+NY&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=46.36116,66.708984&ie=UTF8&z=16&iwloc=A Permalink to this paragraph

why shouldn’t this be, simply: Permalink to this paragraph

http://maps.google.com?q=Empire+State+Building,+New+York,+NY Permalink to this paragraph

I just filled out my profile. Its url is: Permalink to this paragraph

http://www.google.com/s2/profiles/103628798844723879427 Permalink to this paragraph

Why not: Permalink to this paragraph

He’s absolutely right. I’ve had similar quibbles myself about Windows Live when I wrote:

To continue Dave’s theme about profiles, to get to my profile on Windows Live one would have to go to http://cid-550f681dad532637.profile.live.com/. Would http://jamiethomson.profile.live.com/ be so bad?

  2. Not sying I agree but considering it seems to be consistent from do very different providers… is this to prevent squatters or eploits?

  3. Maybe they’re geo coordinates? The one for profiles does seem more reasonable, but on the other hand, there are many people who might have the same exact name. Even their middle name! Might not be fair for the people who didn’t get to it first, or weren’t even born at the time. Nicknames in the URL would be fine, just not whole names.

  4. Yeah I have to agree. If they did give out personlized URLs you would run into the same issues you have with domain names, not to mention censoring.

  5. I think the maps and profile URLs are pretty reasonable – the maps seems to have coordinates while multiple people with the same name would create quite a mess. However, the www is pretty irritating though, and I redirect it for my websites.

  6. John/Michael,I agree its ever going to be perfect because one might not get the nam that one wants but personally speaking I would still much rather be known as jamiethomson2 (for example) rather than some incomprehensible GUID.-Jamie
