Thoughts, about stuff

It seems not everyone is enamoured by Hotmail’s new Quick Add feature

with 38 comments

As least not judging by the comments on my blog entry Hotmail Quick Add:

  • I would like to know how to close the "Quick Add" pane
  • how do I get rid of the Quick add pane? please help!!!!
  • I too LOATHE this new feature and desperately want to get rid of it. Help please.
  • I have kept hotmail since its inception over all other emails for the simple fact it "had" a wide viewing / compose area and the main reason I suggested and referred it to all my friends who used other forms of email. This has ceased until we have the option to remove Quick add
  • "Quick Add" is one of the most annoying useless waste of space options I have seen, ever. Can "Quick Add" pane be closed, removed, deleted, never to be seen again?
  • I totally hate its wasted space too and also want to get rid of it.. HOW?!?

I must admit I am rather surprised that there is no option to remove it.

  1. Jamie you are getting exactly the same feedback about the ‘Quick Add’ feature that prevailed when Windows Live Desktop had its ‘search’ feature incorporated in it all those many moons ago! The criticisms were exactly the same then, takes up too much room, etc etc, and the end result was that firstly the Windows Live Mail Desktop team DID include a way that you could disable it, and then when Windows Live Mail was eventually released it was no longer included. I was actually quite upset at the time, as I did find it useful, but the haters won the day.

  2. Well I haven’t got it – just the advert! No worries;-)

  3. Yes, lots of feedback coming in on this. Rest assured we’re sending it all along to the Hotmail team. Thanks!

  4. I agree it eats up about 1/3 of my page and there is no way to get rid of it. Why not have a close out on it?Don

  5. Make it optional, This would make everybody happy. I personnal dislike it and feel that it invades my screen. There are other options for us….

  6. I totally agree. This unasked-for large commercial windo is disgusting. It’s distracting from my work and I don’t want to send my contacts yet another annoying unsolicited commercial message. How do I get rid of it?????????????????????????????????????????Will you guys (Windows Live) please stop trying to "IMPROVE" everything???? Every time you do you make my life a lot harder and I have to waste hours of my precious time trying to get rid of your "improvements". Enough already. (There ARE other email programs that don’t do this to their customers!!!

  11. 1. It seems like some people are complaining about the overall change from 1980s Horizontal Ad over the top compared to the Vertical Ad on the side… To those people I say: Get a wide screen monitor…2. If the Quick Add feature was able to be collapsed or disabled you can guarentee there would be a Vertical Ad there instead. Switch your language settings to a market without the Quick Add feature to see what that looks like. I think we can all agree the Quick Add is better than the animated Get a Degree now Ads.

  12. This Quick Add is offensive and a PIECE of CRAP and I agree with Ellen King.I do not know how Ellen King got in my comment…I am the Administrator and using my e-mail in Hot Mail

  13. Marie says: Some of these ads are just plain nauseating! Especially, the teeth ads. Yuk!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP! I want to rid myself of this nuisance.

  14. This is stupid. I ll go back to gmail if this isnt addressed by Big Brother (Microsoft)!

  15. First, I will say (perhaps off topic, but finally of relevance) that I can no longer hate a company whose zillionaire founder has put most of his money into highly effective foundations fighting Aids, improving education, reducing poverty in Africa, etc. At least the money is going somewhere useful, even if the software has always sort of sucked. That said, isn’t this more of the Microsoft tendency that drives us all nuts. It’s like being a teenager with a mother who plans your dates for you and then makes sure you do it the way she’s planned it. Enough! By the way, I think the Microsoft compulsion to add features no one wants and that take up useful space, slow down the program or, often, both, has spread to other software companies. About half of my 60-90 music software programs have gone to a point of maximum effectiveness and then start getting worse. Acid, for example, but that’s only the worst among many.

  16. I just started using Hotmail instead of the standard MSN email format, but i will not stay with it due to the QUICK ADD pane, it takes up way too much room, please PLEASE give us the option to remove it or at the very least make it smaller! This is a very poor format and really difficult to write emails with!

  20. I do NOT like the Quick Add feature. I pay for the "premium" Hotmail service.They/MS/hotmail needs to fix this, OR I am a Former customer. We’ll see if they actually care about the feedback they request.

    November 6, 2009 at 4:54 am

  21. I would dearly love to get rid of both Quick ADD & Bing. I will quit hot mail soon if this continues. What a waste.

    November 13, 2009 at 5:52 am

  22. Used to use outlook express with windows xp, just changed to windows 7 64bit and love it, BUT having tried live hotmail, I JUST HATE those annoying adverts and am looking for an alternative way to get my emails.

    November 14, 2009 at 9:15 pm

  23. Thanks for your reply Jamie, but I am already using livemail and that’s the problem, that’s where that irritating annoying distracting flashing advert banner is on the side of, so I will be leaving livemail and trying outlook from my soon to be installed office 2007.

    November 15, 2009 at 10:18 am

  24. Thanks, I am no longer confused, I now use "windows live mail" and not "live hotmail" and no longer have to put up with those annoying adverts.

  26. I have sent any number of adverse comments about this to Hotmail. I feel thoroughly cheated in having this feature – which may be useful to some users – forced on me. Even if I wanted to use it I would still object to being forced to have it. Just how lost in some specialist corporate culture would someone have to be to imagine EVERYONE wants this?I think some part of Microsoft is losing the plot somewhere. Is there any way of contacting Microsoft at a management level above the level perpetrating this nonsense. I suspect someone, somewhere is sitting on a mountain of complaints they don’t want want someone higher up to know about. Just adding more and more to that hidden pile will accomplish litle. I just hope someone at Microsoft who matters reads this site and others like it.

    November 21, 2009 at 10:40 am

  27. Why is not Quick Add optional? Why is there no way to close the feature? So bizarre?

    November 22, 2009 at 4:13 pm

  28. Closed blog,You could email steveb@microsoft.com

    November 22, 2009 at 6:54 pm

  29. There is an answer for all of you. Simply use Windows Live Mail on your desktop! Lovely wide viewing area for you to read your e-mails, including your Hotmail and Live mail accounts, so no need whatsoever to see any Ads.or Quick Add column! Get it at http.downloads.live.com
