Windows Live Devices to provide extra security features‏?

with 6 comments

In the upcoming wave 4 release of Windows Live it is expected that the ability to register your devices against your Windows LiveID as is currently available with Live Mesh will appear as Windows Live Devices. With that in mind a report on Neowin today entitled Coming soon to Hotmail, push email for mobile phones via ActiveSync caught my eye with the following intriguing information:

“[In wave 4] users will be able to send an account recapture code via an SMS message or regain access to their Hotmail accounts by using a computer that is registered with Hotmail”

For “Hotmail account” read “LiveId account” and (therefore) for “Registered with Hotmail” read “Registered with Windows Live”.

The inference that I draw from this is that Windows Live Devices will be used not just for file synchronisation but also as an additional security mechanism. After all, if Windows Live knows that a particular device belongs to you then why not send information via that device rather than via an email address or telephone number.

Interesting indeed.

  1. What will this entail Jamie? Will it mean you can register your Live ID with your mobile, comp, etc and then not have to keep logging in all the time?

  2. Something like that, yes, maybe. This is part of the reason I was so interested in Mesh all that time.

  3. Well that’s a good thing, Although I don’t use it with my mobile/have a laptop/ etc, I can see that would be useful to those who do.

  6. Can’t wait for it to come. I just wish the Windows Live team would move on a faster pace. They’re a snail compared to Google.
