Thoughts, about stuff

Here’s a wacky idea…

…now that Mesh is moving into the Windows engineering team will it be used to synchronise your clipboard across multiple computers?

Only joking! (Though many a true word is spoken in jest!!)

  1. Hi Oran,Yeah I remembr Live Clipboard. But wasn”t that more about being able to copy any content from one web page to another or something like that? It wasn’t about having the same clipboard on multiple machines. Or was it?-Jamie

  2. Imagine the security issues. It makes my head hurt.

  3. Not sure I agree with that greg. I just see this as ashorthand of getting something from one machine to another. Imagine selecting a file in explorer on machine A, pressing CTRL-C, then instantly go to another computer and press CTRL-V to paste it into explorer there. You’re only doing it on your own machines so where’s the security risk?

  4. I suppose my primary concern would be the potential for other programs to gain access to the clipboard and potentially read sensitive information in ways we haven’t previously considered. Weren’t a handful of IE security flaws related to websites that could snoop through clipboard items? But you may be onto something; I can certainly see the potential convenience for quick access to copied data across multiple machines.

  5. So is the concept that the contents of the clipboard resides in the cloud and is synced to local clipboards via Mesh? What if I don’t fire up my other machine/device for a day or two – the logistics of syncing something that was originally intended for short term storage sounds difficult.

  6. I expect there ARE security concerns that don’t occur when you first think about it – I admit security is never the first thing I think about when I write these things. Regardless – there’s definitely potential here.

  7. LOL. That’s cause you’re an idea guy. It is a pretty slick concept, and I can think of at least 101 times it would’ve saved me the trouble of copying files to a network share (or heaven forbid, e-mail) just to get ’em from here to there.

  8. Rod,Good questions – and you’re absolutely right to ask them. Would we have the option to persist the contents of our clipboard to the cloud when all our machines turn off? Would you even want to? I think its our job to ask the questions and Microsoft (if they were ever to implement this) to answer them.cheersJamie

  9. Rod,Absolutely. I’ve often thought that Evernote combined with Mesh would be an awesome app. Ever note already IS an awesome app. Imagine if you could just say to Evernote, "Here’s one of my Mesh folders. Go and index all the photos in it" That would be cool.-Jamie
